Great Britains Largest and Most Tourist-Friendly Wine Industry

Though the United Kingdom is among the littlest wine producers in the ECU, it is typically said to be the center of the world trade in wine and, as a consequence, has a flourishing industry stretching from importers and bottlers through to freight forwarders and retailers. The Wine and Spirits Trade organisation (WSTA) was established in 1824 representing all components of the supply chain.

Grape types of UK
Principal grape varietals grown in Britain and Wales are Reichensteiner, Bacchus, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Muller Thurgau and Seyval Blanc. Almost all of which are virtually unknown to most UK wine drinkers. Out of the top 10 states of origin for UK imports, 6 are outside of the Western European Union. Australia is the biggest exporter to England, accounting for 2.5 million hectoliters in 2004.
They're followed by France, which accounts for 2.3 million hl and the United States which accounts for 1.5 million hl. The United Kingdom is the second biggest importer by volume in the ECU, extraordinarily closely behind Germany. Notwithstanding now showing a total of 362 registered vineyards, comprising of 923 hectares, in Britain and Wales, English and Welsh wines account for slightly less than 1 percent of the total wine sold in Britain

UK Quality Wine Scheme
The United Kingdom introduced its Quality Wine Scheme in 1991. The motive was to help market the best English and Welsh wines. Wines submitted to this project must meet stern standards covering demarcation of production areas, vine types, cultivation, wine making strategies and maximum yields. They must also be the subject of an analytical test considering physical and chemical parts of the wine together with an organoleptic tasting.Wines meeting these stringent factors can show the phrase 'English Vineyards Quality Wine psr ' or 'Welsh Vineyards Quality Wine psr ' on their label. The system isn't dissimilar to that of the French Appellation Controlled system. PSR means Produced in Mentioned Regions.

UK Regional Wine Scheme
The United Kingdom Regional Wine Scheme was introduced on April 1st 1997. According to that scheme, wines must meet certain analytical and organoleptic factors but the guidelines are less tough on use of vine types.

UK producers may operate under the guidelines of both the United Kingdom Quality Wine Scheme and the United Kingdom Regional Wine Scheme.
The UK Vineyards Association (UKVA) is the primary producer organisation representing the great majority of UK vineyards. English Wine Producers (EWP) is a voluntary group of leading English vineyards working in close organisation with the UKVA.
